We have reached in the final phases of CAT 2013 preparation and almost the exam in on our door. So at this time many of you would be thinking that how many questions you need to attempt in order to score 99 + percentile in CAT 2013. Well we all know this depends on the difficulty level of the paper that we are going to encounter but still going by my experience of appearing in CAT from the last three years I can give you some idea about how much attempts will help you let score in excess of 99 percentile.
2. Medium or Moderately Difficult
3. Difficult
There was no such slot in the CAT window in which the paper was said to be extremely difficult. However as no one knows about how this normalization process is done so I can not tell you the exact attempts and the respective accuracy for different levels of paper.
2. A guy who made it to IIM Ahmedabad -
One guy in the coaching Institute in which I teach, scored overall 99.61 percentile and he finally made it to IIM Ahmedabad.
His first section attempts were 25 and percentile scored was 99.58
His second section attempts were 23 and percentile scored was 97.45
3. A guy who made it to IIM Bangalore -
This guy scored overall 99.68 percentile in CAT 2012 and finally made it to IIM Bangalore.
His first section attempts were 22 and scored 99.41 percentile in it.
His second section attempts were 23 and scored 98.59 percentile in it.
General Percentile with respect to Attempts and Marks -
If you can attempt 20 - 22 questions in each section of CAT 2013 and all are correct then you will score in more than 99.50 percentile in that section of CAT and overall your percentile will reach in the range of 99.75 +
If you have one section of your's very strong. Suppose your English Section is very strong and you can correct 25 questions in second section than you will score more than 99.80 percentile in that section. With this much percentile in second section you need to do only 15 - 17 questions correct in the first section. Doing 15 to 17 questions correct will give you percentile around 98 which will increase your overall percentile to about 99.70
2. If you have attempted 50 questions out of 60 in CAT 2013 and around 5 are wrong then you will score around 99.80 percentile in CAT.
3. If you have attempted 55 questions out of 60 in CAT 2013 and around 5 are wrong then you will score around 99.95 percentile in CAT.
4. If you have attempted 40 questions out of 60 in CAT 2013 and around 5 are wrong then you will score around 99.20 percentile in CAT.
5. If you have attempted 35 questions out of 60 in CAT 2013 and around 5 are wrong then you will score around 98 percentile in CAT.\

Going by the papers that the candidates appearing in CAT have encountered we can sum a general break up of the the difficulty level of different slots paper. The paper that have been seen are one of the different types.
1. Easy2. Medium or Moderately Difficult
3. Difficult
There was no such slot in the CAT window in which the paper was said to be extremely difficult. However as no one knows about how this normalization process is done so I can not tell you the exact attempts and the respective accuracy for different levels of paper.
Below I am writing some specific examples of percentiles scored by various students at different attempts.
1. My Personal experience with CAT -
In CAT 2012 I made 24 attempts out of 30 in first section of Quantitative Aptitude and Data Interpretation and I was sure that all of them would be correct. If any of them would have been wrong than obviously I can not know about it as we have no option to review the paper in which we appear. So the percentile that I scored in Section 1 of CAT 2012 was 99.62 with a score of 168 out of 225.
My second section of CAT 2012 went horrible as I was not even able to score 75 percentile in it. My score in this section was 95 out of 225.
My Overall Percentile in CAT 2012 was 96.14

Doing 15 to 17 questions correct will give you percentile around 98 which will increase your overall percentile to about 99.70
So here is the break up -
1. If you have attempted 45 questions out of 60 in CAT 2013 and around 5 are wrong then you will score around 99.55 percentile in CAT.2.

Thank you for your wonderful post. This time I have attempted 13 ques in Sec1 with almost 100% accuracy and sec2 22 ques with 95% accuracy. This is my 3rd attempt at CAT and in all the previous attempts I had a score 94%ile + in section 2 but 75-80%ile in Sec1 .So this time I attempted questions which I was 100% sure about . But now this decision is haunting me.I really can't change what I have already done but do you think this will be enough to get a decent score?
ReplyDeleteAs far as your attempts of second section are concerned I would say that you have done an excellent job attempting 22 questions with 95 percent accuracy.....so if 20 of them are correct and 2 wrong you will definitely score in excess of 99 percentile in section 2...if the paper that came in ur slot was difficult...
ReplyDeleteComing to Section 1 if all 13 attempts are correct you have full chances of scoring in the range of 94 to 98 percentile.....if some questions went wrong in these 13 attempts then your percentile will go down....
Thanks for the analysis.
ReplyDeleteLast year I attempted 19 questions in Section- 1 and got 92.7 % while in section -2 I attempted 16 questions and got 80%. I knew my accuracy was not at par last year.
This time on 31st October morning slot, I attempted 21 in section 1 with 90% accuracy and 20 in section 2 with 75-80 % accuracy. What percentile I can expect this time?
I attempted 14 in quant in which one is wrong and 22 in vetbal with 95% accuracy. Quant section was seemingly pretty tough. What chances do i stand for an iim call. I have over 5 years of experience. I am an architect.
ReplyDeleteHi Harshit
ReplyDeleteThank you for writing this wonderful article. I attempted around 15 questions in Section 1 with 90% accuracy and all 30 questions in Section 2 with 90% accuracy. How much sectional and overall percentile can I expect? Section 1 was moderate-difficult apart from 2 sitter questions. In section 2 LR was easy and VA was again moderate to difficult.
Hi Harshit
ReplyDeleteThank you for writing this wonderful article. I attempted around 15 questions in Section 1 with and all 30 questions in Section 2 each with 90% accuracy. How much sectional and overall percentile can I expect? Section 1 questions ranged from moderate-difficult apart from 2 sitter questions. In section 2 LR was easy and VA was again moderate to difficult. (Aiming for FMS)
Hi Harshit

MR Architect ur attempts are quite good 14 attempts with one wrong and 22 attempts with 95 per cent accuracy ur second section percentile would definitely be very high if 95 percent accuracy is there....so if overall out of 36 attempts your 33 are correct and 3 wrong then you stand high chances of scoring in excess of 99 percentile....may be the range of 99.2 to 99.7
ReplyDelete@Aman Pawar your attempts this year are quite good going by the difficulty levels of this year's CAT...So if out of your 41 attempts if 33 are correct and 8 are wrong you stand chances of scoring percentile in the range of 96-99
ReplyDelete15 questions in Section 1 with 90% accuracy and all 30 questions in Section 2 with 90% accuracy...second section attempts are very excellent....so going by ur second section performance you will definitely score somewhere in the range of high 99's that is 99.9 in English section may be....Coming to first section you can score anywhere from 90 to 96 so overall you can expect to score some where in the range of 96 to 99 plus....
ReplyDeleteThank u so much for replying :) :) ...amazin blog bro!
DeleteI attempted 8 in quant with 80% accuracy and 13 in vetbal with 85% accuracy. Quant section was seemingly pretty tough. where do i stand.??
ReplyDeleteI attempted 8 in quant with 80% accuracy and 13 in verbal with 85% accuracy. Quant section was seemingly pretty tough. where do l stand?
ReplyDeleteHi Harshit,
ReplyDeleteI attempted 11 questions in section 1 and 21 in section 2,both with 80% accuracy. What percentile can i expect approximately?
Hi Harshit,
ReplyDeleteI attempted 11 questions in section 1 and 21 in section 2,both with 80% accuracy. What percentile can i expect approximately?
In cat 2013
ReplyDeleteAttempted 26 in section 1 and i believe that 20-22 are correct.
Attempted 28 in section 2 and in that i believe 20 are correct...
what shall i expect
Hi Harshit
ReplyDeleteI attempted 26 in section 1 with 24/25 correct and 23 in section 2 with 16 correct(atleast). What can I expect?
Hi Harshit
ReplyDeleteI attempted 26 in sec 1 with 24/25 correct and 23 in sec 2 with 16 correct atleast. What can i expect?
shripad you can score any thing in the range of 60 to 80 percentile....
ReplyDeletemine are
ReplyDeletesection1- 24 with all correct.
Section2-20 with 80percent accuracy.
What can be my percentile.
I attempted 21 questions in section out of which a minimum of 17 are correct and 20 questions in section 2 which has 17-18 correct answers.. what can be my percentile?
ReplyDeleteI attempted 21 questions in section 1 and minimum 17 and maximum 18 are correct and attempted 20 questions in section 2 and am expecting 17 to 18 questions to be correct.. What percentile can I expect?
ReplyDelete24 all correct attempts in first section will give you in excess of 99.85 percentile in maths section....in second section with 16 correct snd 4 wrong you can score anywhere in the range of 97 to 99 plus......so overall ur percentile can reach in the range of 99.7 to 99.99
ReplyDeletewith both 17 correct in first and second section it comes to a total of 42 attempts with 8 wrong and 34 correct can fetch u percentiles in the range of 96 to 99 plus...
ReplyDeleterd 721 urs is also the exact same case as i have replied in my immediate previous comment....35 correct out of 40-41 questions has the potential of fetching you in excess of 99 percentile but we can not be sure at this point of time......but if ur given stats come out to be true then you will definitely manage above 98 percentile....it totally depends on how much weight age prometric gives to negative attempts in its normalization process....so fingers crossed.....
ReplyDeleteIt's the same person actually :)
ReplyDeleteMy comment didn't appear so I thought there would have been some error and hence posted it again.. :)
hello harshit..my attempts are 14 in section 1 with 13correct and 19 in section 2 where I should get atleast 13-14 correct. What can I expect?
ReplyDeletePlease tell me my expected percentile..u haven't replied yet
ReplyDeleteAnit sorry for my late reply...
ReplyDeleteFirst of all I will say your go at CAT 2013 has been perfect as your attempts and accuracy both are very good....having 25 correct in 26 of Quant section will get you percentile in the range of 99.99 in maths section as there are hardly candidates who have attempted 25 questions correct....
Coming to English if 16 are correct and 7 are wrong then also you will score in the range of 97 to 99....
which will take you cumulative percentile to around 99.70 - 99.95....if the data you have given is correct....
BEST OF LUCK!!!!!!
Harshit,I am waiting for my reply as well. 14 attemts in section 1 with atleast 13 correct and 19 attempts in section 2 with 12-13 correct.. What should I expect in terms of percentile?
ReplyDeleteMy Quesry is you scored 95/225 and that amounted to 75 percentile...
ReplyDelete95/2.5=-38 raw score
and, if 16C 7 W => 41 raw score ,one can expect 97 percentile???
Just I do not know how normalization is done..
90 is made to 225,hence a 2.5 factor involved..
can u please clear my doubt???

Thanks for the reply Harshit.I believe the data provided by me in maximum probability is correct, though 1-2 might still go here and there.Still I feel I am dangling in sec-2 with just 23 attempts which includes a mere 5 in logic and the QA section I got was a bit easier which might not be that fruitful.Hope your prediction turns out good. Thanks again.
ReplyDelete13 correct with one wrong has the potential of giving you a percentile of near about 97 in first section....in second section if 7 go wrong and 12 are correct then the low accuracy of second section can play a huge effect on your percentiles.....can expect anything from 75 to 90....overall in the range of 90 to 96....This is just a prediction......there are full chances that this can be much better....ALL THE BEST.....
ReplyDeleteAnit buddy I sincerely hope that you get your dream college(IIM Ahmedabad), I am sure that this would be your dream college as it is the dream college of all MBA aspirants.....I know what amount of hard work is needed to perform as good as you have performed in this year's CAT.....Your dream of this year's CAT also very much depends on your luck in the English section.......This section didn't favoured me last year and shattered my dream of managing an IIM...My Quant percentile of CAT 2012 99.82 and English not even 80......I hope nothing like this happens to you....ALL THE BEST.......
ReplyDeleteI could not manage any of A,B,C or L last year due to one reason or the other inspite of a good percentile in both sections.keeping my fingers crossed. How have you fared this year?

ReplyDeleteHi Harshit
ReplyDeleteWhat if somebody gets arnd 28-29 correct in sec 2 and does comparitively poorly in sec 1 like just 12/15 correct...how badly wud the OA CAT %ile b affected? Coz if one gets say 100/225 in sec1 and 215-220/225 in sec2...wudnt that b more than 99.%ile (315/450)...do they calculate OA on basis of scaled score or percentile avg in each section?
Hey I have attempted 10 questions in section 1 I guess 2 3 might be incorrect and I have attempt 15 in section where I believe 11 12 would be correct could u tell me what percentile may I expect ?

@Kirankumar..... Buddy it is impossible that you can get the paper of CAT 2013 from anywhere.... You can only get to know about the idea of the type of questions that came this year if any of your friends have attempted CAT 2013...
ReplyDeleteAnkur your credentials are very good and for finally managing IIM Lucknow you should aim for more than 99.50 percentile in CAT 2014....Definitely the cut off percentile of CAT for your branch choice would be less that this but aiming higher makes sure your chances of being selected.....

Hello , i just read the post above and from the break i realize if i attempt 45 out of 60 with 5 wrong ,i will score less than a person attempting 40 out of 60 with none wrong. Please correct me if i am wrong , thankyou:)
