XAT 2014 Analysis and Estimated Cut Offs

The second most awaited exam of MBA entrance of 2013-14 season is over now. Lacs of candidates took the test today from centres spread all over the country. Yet again this year also Xavier Aptitude Test has maintained itself as the exam that tests the conceptual understanding of problems, patience, problem solving under pressure, reading speed, Intelligence Quotient, decision making, wise exam taking strategy and many more traits that define and guide our exam performance in this difficult and tough environment of competitive MBA exams where candidates are furiously competing with each other in order to reserve for themselves a seat in their dream MBA college. XLRI is definitely one such dream college.

The paper was comprised of 2 parts. PART 1 AND PART 2

Part 1 was divided into three sections. They were -

Section A - Verbal Ability
Section B - Decision Making
Section C - Quantitative Ability

Part 2 was of General Knowledge. It had 20 questions in it. Some questions of it were from core General Knowledge part but were of generic nature such as Languages covered in Eighth Schedule of our Constitution, Fundamental Rights etc. Rest all questions could basically be covered through regular newspaper and magazine reading. I would not say that this section was easy but regular newspaper readers would have attempted more than 10 questions correctly.

VERBAL ABILITY

This section had around 28 questions. Every aspirant found this section very tough as 15 questions of this section were of Reading Comprehension which were reported to be very tough as the language of RC's was tough and hard to infer. Rest 13 questions of the Verbal Ability section consisted of Fill in the Blanks questions, Paragraph Completion Questions, Para Jumbles, Assumption and Inference Questions etc.  Over all this section was tough and any attempts in the range of 15 to 20 can be considered good and attempts more than 20 with an accuracy of 85-95 % can be considered to be very good.

DECISION MAKING

This section had around 24 questions. These questions would have been attempted with quite an accuracy if the students during their preparation have covered questions of Critical Reasoning and Advanced Critical Reasoning, Course of Action and Effect, Statements and Assumptions, Implications and Deductions. Attempts in the range of 14 to 18 with an accuracy of more than 90 percent will easily get you across this section.

QUANTITATIVE APTITUDE AND DATA INTERPRETATION

This section had around 31 questions. The section was very tough. Any average student would be able to attempt around 10 to 12 questions in a time limit of 45 minutes. Any student who considers himself to be above average would be able to attempt around 16 questions in this section with more than 90 percent accuracy if they are able to short-list the right set of questions to attempt.

ESSAY TOPIC -  The Most Beautiful things in the World can not be seen or touched but can only be felt through heart.

ESTIMATED CUT OFFS - Any score of 40 plus will let you score in the range of 98 plus percentile most probably more than 99 percentile. Any score of 35 plus will get you a percentile in the range of 94 to 96.

Guarantee of these estimates is not being taken by the author of this article. It is just a prediction going by the experience of the author of taking up XAT from the last 4 years and may not come out to be true.
