Major and Important Cities of the United States of America - World Geography

1. Atlanta: It is the capital of Georgia State of U.S.A. It is famous for the production of cold drinks. Coca Cola was invented in this city. It is a modern city famous for its sky scrapers, hotels-restaurants and markets. In 1996, Olympic games were held here. 

2. Boston: It is the capital of Massachusetts State of U.S.A. and a historical, cultural and industrial city. Its Old North Church, South Meeting House, Palace with Golden Tomb, Trinity Church and Public Library are famous throughout the world. 

3. Chicago: This city in Illinois State of U.S.A. is located along the Lake Michigan coast. It is also famous by the name of ‘Windy City’. The world’s largest railway junction is located here. It is a major centre of underground transport. It is a world famous centre for Pork and Beef production. It is third largest city of U.S.A. and focal point of roads and railways from all over the U.S.A.

4. Cleveland: It is a city in Ohio State of U.S.A. It is located along Lake Erie coast. It is a production centre of Iron and Coal and makes steel for iron blast furnaces. It is a production centre of ready made clothes. 

5. Los Angeles: Established in 1781 by Spaniards, it is a major city on the western coast of U.S.A. It is famous for entertainment, electronic goods etc. It is also called ‘City of New Fashion’. ‘Disneyland’ located here is world famous. It is second largest populated city of U.S.A.

6. Phoenix: It is the capital and largest city of Arizona State of U.S.A. Workshops for aeroplanes, computers and cotton cloth are located here. The industries associated with Aluminium, iron and steel and aeroplanes have developed a lot. 

7. Salt Lake City: It is situated in Utah Province of U.S.A along Great Salt lake. It is amongst the largest city of Utah province and a major city. It is famous for production of Sugar using Sugar beet and mental industry and salt production. 

8. Denver: Situated in Colorado State of U.S.A. it is most important city of the high plains. It is also known as ‘One Mile High City’ because it is situated at a height of one mile above the sea level on Rocky Mountain. It is also called western capital of U.S.A. It is famous for oil refining industry. 

9. Indianapolis: Situated on the White River is a tributary of the Mississippi River, Indianapolis is the capital of the Indiana State of U.S.A. Initially, it was a grain market. Situated in the heart of the agriculturally productive part of the country. 

10. Sacramento: Situated on the coast of Sacramento Rivers to the east of San Francisco, it is the capital city of California. 

11. Gary: It is a major city of Indiana State of U.S.A. located along lake Michigan coast. It is a major centre for Iron and steel production. It was founded as a major steel producing centre in 1906. 

12. Detroit: Located in Michigan State of U.S.A. along Lake Erie coast, it is a world famous city. It is U.S.A.’s largest production centre of Automobiles. Therefore, it is also called ‘Automobile Capital’ of the world. The workshops of world’s three largest automobile companies, like-General Motors, Ford and Chrysler are located in this city. It is connected of Ontario town of Canada via tunnels. 

13. San Diego: It is major coastal city, situated in California State of U.S.A. Due to pleasant weather, It is also called ‘City of Evergreen Spring’. Apart from aircraft engineering, it is a major centre of U.S. Navy. It is the Pacific port of U.S.A. which is nearest to the Panama Canal. It is one of the most important cultural educational and medical centre of U.S.A. 

14. Seattle: It is a world famous city located in Washington State of U.S.A. It is famous for aircraft industry. It is the world’s largest aircraft industrial centre. World famous aircraft making companies ‘Boeing Company’ and ‘Lockheed Martin’ are situated here. It is famous for wooden boards, aluminium smelting and electric engineering. 15. Philadelphia: Located along the coast of River Dilware in U.S.A., it is famous for its historical building. It is also known as ‘Birth place of U.S.A.’ because the documents of independence were signed in this city in 1776. It is known by the name of ‘Quaker City’. 

16. New Orleans: Located along the River Mississippi coast in Lousiana State of U.S.A. Established by French in 1718, This city is also known by the name of ‘Foreign City’. It is a major centre of oil refining. A big rail junction is also here. This city is connected to Gulf of Mexico through canals. A major centre for cotton cloth production. 

17. St. Louis: It is located in U.S.A. on the western bank of River Mississippi. It is famous for aircraft, vehicles, Beer, electronic and chemical industry. 

18. San Francisco: The city located in California State of U.S.A., which is world famous for its glittering, entertaining and fashionable life. It is also a big trading and financial centre on the western coast of U.S.A. It is also known by the name of ‘The City of Golden Gate’. It is a centre for food processing, steel oil refining and ship-building. It is famous for ‘Silicon Valley project’ and the computer as high tech manufacturing. 

19. Harvard: It is the oldest American University founded in 1763 at Combridge, Massachusetts. It is named after John Harvard, an English settler, who bequeathed to it his library and half of his estate. It is one of the most prestigious universities in the world and is especially renowned for its engineering, technology, pure science, management, medicine and professional courses. 

20. New York: It is located in New York State of U.S.A. and biggest city of U.S.A. Famous by the name of ‘Big Apple’, it is the financial and cultural capital of U.S.A. It is located on the bank of River Hudson. World’s busiest airport is located here. It is most populated city of U.S.A. and also known as ‘The City of skyscraper’. Printing, publishing, metal fabrication, electrical appliances, ready made clothes and food processing are the major industries. 

21. Baton Rouge: It is the capital of Louisiana State of U.S.A. and a site of major university. This city is located on Mississippi delta. It is famous for oil refining mills and associated petrochemical manufacturing. 

22. Houston: This is an inland major port situated in Texas State of U.S.A. which is famous for oil refining, ship building and chemical goods industry. There is NASA space centre here. It is visited by a large number of tourists throughout the year. 

23. Dallas: Situated on the trinity River, it is the second largest city of Texas State of U.S.A. It is famous for the production of oil drilling machines, electricity and food items. Apart from this, here consumer goods, clothes and fashion industries are found at large. The airport of Dallas (Forth Worth) is the largest commercial airport in the world. President John. F. Kennedy was assassinated here on Nov. 22, 1963.

24. Las Vegas: Located in western part of U.S.A. It is a major city of California State of U.S.A. In U.S.A. Gambling became legal in 1931 at this place. Therefore, it is famous throughout the world for ‘Casinos’ and night club. It lies at the northern end of the Lake Mead-the reservoirs of the Hoover Dam. Thousands of domestic and international tourists visit this city throughout the year, especially on weekends. 

25. Anchorage: It is a major city and an important port of Alaska State of U.S.A. It is also a major airport. It is an important town for strategical view point. Established in 1915 as a railway town. It is a example of mountain glacier. It is a centre for fish processing. 

26. Juneu: It is the capital of Alaska State of U.S.A. and a major town. Alaska’s famous Melaspina Glacier is located here, which is an example of mountain glacier. It is a centre for fish processing. 

27. Honolulu: It is a famous city situated on Oahu Island of Hawaiian Island group in N. Pacific Ocean. It is famous by the name of ‘The Cross Road of Pacific Ocean’. It is a famous ‘call port’. It is the headquarters of the U.S. Pacific Fleet. The Japanese attack on the U.S. naval base at Pearl Harbour on December 7, 1941 brought the U.S.A. into the Second World War. 

28. Milwaukee: It is located on the western coast of Lake Michigan in Wisconsin State of U.S.A. It is state’s largest city. It is known by ‘Chicago-Milwaukee’ tool belt. It was established in 1822. The population of the city consists mainly of Germans, Polish, English and Italians. It is a important port on the St. Lawrence Seaway. 

29. Pittsburgh: This city is situated in north part of Appalachian Mountain is Pennsylvania State of U.S.A. It is famous as ‘The Iron and Steel Capital of the world’ or Iron city of U.S.A. It obtains Coal from Appalachian Mountain and Iron are from the region around lake Superior. Its main industries include iron and steel, engineering goods, metallurgy, high technology, engineering goods. 

30. Buffalo: It is located near Niagara Waterfall in New York State of U.S.A. It is famous for hydel power production. It is U.S.A.’s largest centre for wheat flour production. 

31. Birmingham: It is located in the highland region of south Appalachian in Alabama State of U.S.A. It is famous as ‘Pittsburgh of South’. With the presence of Coal and Iron Ore and also mineral oil and hydel power this region has developed tremendously. It has huge reserves of Bituminous Coal. 

32. Forth Birth: It is situated in Texas State of U.S.A. on the bank of River Trinity. It was settled in 1849. The main industries of Forth Birth include petroleum refining, aircraft manufacturing, textile, grain trade and food processing. Its airport is one of the biggest and busiest in U.S.A.

33. Minneapolis: It is situated in Minnesota State of U.S.A. It is the major town settlement for production of Wheat and Milk. It is a major processing and distribution centre for the grain and cattle farm. It is also the home of the world’s most powerful computer, the liquid cooled ‘Cray-2’. 

34. Yellowstone National Park: It is situated in Wyoming State of U.S.A. World’s famous geyser ‘Old Faithful Geyser’, is situated here which erupts for every 64 minutes. Red Indian tribes are found here in large numbers. 

35. Cincinnati: This city is situated in Ohio State of U.S.A. on the bank of River, Ohio. It is a major centre for making machine tools, engineering goods, automobiles, aircraft engine and agriculture machine. It is famous for production of packed meat. 

36. Miami: It is situated in Florida State of U.S.A. It has a very beautiful beach, where tourists come inlarge numbers. Therefore, lcecream industry has developed here a lot. 

37. Hollywood: It is a suburb located near Los Angeles city of U.S.A. It is a world famous centre of film industry. 

38. Galveston: It is a major city situated on the coast of Gulf of Mexico. It is famous for oil refining. It is a port city. It is much affected by Tropical cyclone-Hurricane. Galveston is a leading medical centre and sea port trading in Cotton, Sulphur and grain. 

39. Baltimore: This is a commercial city and industrial seaport of Maryland State of U.S.A. It has been named after Lord Baltimore, the English proprietor of the territory. Its main industries includes ship-building, oil refining, chemical and aerospace.
