Iron Dome & other Air Defense Systems

 The Iron Dome Defense System

Iron dome defense system was in the news due to the recent clashes between Israel and Palestine over the tensions related to Al-Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem.

Israel is now under threat from missiles launched from Palestine and are successful in defending its territories from the frequent missile and rocket attacks thus reducing the loss of life and property to a great extent.

How is Israel successful in defending their territory?

In 2011 Israel deployed a multi mission air defense system developed by Rafael Advanced Defense Systems an Israeli defense technology company.

Key aspects of this defense system

  • Counters short range missiles.
  • Can be easily deployed on a truck.
  • All weather operational ability.
  • Able to handle multiple threats at the same time.
  • Capable of intercepting precise guided missiles, cruise missiles, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV’s) etc.
  • Its defensive range is up to 70 kms.
  • Success rate is between 80% & 90%.

Important elements of iron dome defense system

  • I-DOME is a mobile version of the Iron dome system, which can be deployed on a single truck.
  • C-DOME is a naval version of the Iron dome system.

Other famous defense systems in the world

S-400 developed by Russia

Thaad developed by USA

Patriot developed by USA

Does India have similar defense systems ?

DRDO’s Ballistic Missile Defense Systems (BMD)

BMD is structured as a two-tiered system with Prithvi Air Defence (PAD) for high altitude interception and Ashwin Advanced Air Defence (AAD) for low altitude interception.

PAD –It is a 2 stage (1st Solid fuel & 2nd Liquid Fuel) missile with a maximum interception altitude of 80 kms.

AAD –It is single stage (Solid fuel) missile designed to intercept ballistic missiles at an altitude of 30 kms.
